Natural Egg Dye

Rating: HARD
Adult Supervision Required? YES

To dye eggs naturally, follow these easy steps.

Instructions:

  1. Prewash eggs with soap and water to remove any dirt or oils. Hard boil the eggs and let cool.

  2. To create 1 cup of dye, choose 1 tablespoon of a spice or 1 cup of fruit or vegetables from the list below.

  3. Combine the spice, fruit or vegetable with 1 cup of water and a 1/2 tablespoon of white vinegar.

  4. Bring the pot of ingredients to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer 15-30 minutes (the longer it simmers the more intense the color will be).

  5. Once you have your desired color, remove the pot from the stove and run the liquid through a strainer to remove any large chunks; let cool.

  6. Once the liquid has cooled, place a hard-boiled egg in the dye and let it sit for at least 15 minutes – longer if you want a darker color.

  7. Remove eggs once they reach the desired color and let dry.

Items used to create various colors of dye:
  • Pink/red: Pomegranate juice, red onion skins, beets, chopped rhubarb stalks, cranberry juice, red grape juice
  • Orange: Yellow onion skins, paprika, chili powder
  • Yellow: Orange or lemon peels, shredded carrot, celery seed, ground cumin
  • Green: Spinach
  • Blue: Red cabbage, blueberry juice, blackberries, purple grape juice
  • Brown: Dill seeds, black walnut shells, instant coffee, tea
