Seed Sticks

Spring is a great time to start growing flowers and vegetables. You can grow your own easily with just a few supplies and a little bit of time. This project also makes a great gift idea.

Rating: EASY
Adult Supervision Required? NO

What you need

  • Tongue depressors or popsicle sticks - 1 per seed stick you want to make
  • Permanent marker
  • Glue
  • Seeds - flower or vegetable seeds, small seeds work best
  • Placemat or extra sheet of paper
  • Planting pot (optional)
  • Potting soil (optional)

How to make it

  1. Use the permanent marker to write your name on one side of the popsicle stick and the type of seed on the back side of the stick. (Figure 1)

  2. Spread glue along the bottom 2 inches of the stick. Make sure you don't cover your name or seed type.

  3. Sprinkle the seeds onto the placemat or extra sheet of paper. Roll the end of your stick that has the glue on it around in the seeds. Coat both sides.

  4. Prop your stick up on top of the marker and allow to dry. (Figure 2)

  5. Once dry, your stick is ready to plant! You can plant it outside or in an indoor container.

  6. For a little variation, try writing a special message on the stick and giving it as a gift. Special messages could be "My love for your grows every day" or "Watch our friendship blossom!"
