Have your own garden inside that you never have to water!
Rating: MEDIUM Adult Supervision Required? YES
What you need
- Plastic 2-liter soda pop bottle with cap
- Very sharp scissors or craft knife
- Dirt or potting soil
- Seeds
- Water
How to make it
- Remove and discard the label from the pop bottle. Save the cap!
- Wash, rinse and dry bottle and cap. Replace cap.
- Cut off the bottom of the pop bottle close to the bottom (see picture).
Look for a "line" to cut along, although you may cut higher if you wish.
- Take the bottom piece and cut a half inch vertical snip in one spot. Turn the piece around
halfway and cut another snip into the bottle. This will allow you to move the plastic easier later on.
- Add dirt, potting soil or TAGRO potting
soil to fill the bottom part of the container (about 2-3 inches thick).
- Plant a few seeds in the dirt. Herbs or wildflowers are great
choices.
- Lightly water (about 1/4 cup).
- Take the top part of the bottle and cover the base. You will have to fiddle with the bottle to get it to fit back inside. This is where those earlier snips can help.
- Place in a sunny spot to watch your seeds grow. You won't need to water your seeds. The water will be contained inside the bottle. The water that the plants soak up from the soil will be released through their leaves, condense as droplets on the pop bottle wall, drip back down into the soil and get reused by the plant inside your own
terrarium!
- When the plants are big enough, plant them in a larger pot or in your garden.
