The following photos were taken by the
Tacoma Fire Department during the Dec. 7 and Dec. 8 fire inspection at
the Winthrop Apartment building on the corner of Ninth and Commerce
streets.

An opening in the wall inside the Winthrop is one example
of the compromised structure. The hole could allow smoke
and noxious gases to easily move into the room in the case of a fire.

A high voltage power box in the Winthrop that is not
covered offers one source of concern for fire inspectors.
Open wiring can be an ignition source that could
start a fire.

A light fixture inside the Winthrop has exposed wiring,
as well as an extension cord dangling from the fixture.
Both conditions are violations of the City's fire code.

Openings in the walls following plumbing repairs offer
more places where smoke and gases could fill hallways
and rooms during a fire.

The electrical controls for the Winthrop's elevators were
not covered in the basement of the building, posing another
fire risk. |
